On July 27, Preston Nelson, formerly treasurer of National Postal Mail Handlers Union Local 305, was charged in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia with one count of embezzling union funds in the amount of $13,547.26. The charge follows an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards. The Richmond, Va.-based Local 305 represents mail handlers in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. (OLMS, 8/4/06).
Former Financial Secretary for Buffalo-Area Local Pleads Guilty
On July 18, Richard Takacs, ex-financial secretary for Operative Plasterers & Cement Masons International Association Local 9, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of making false entries in union records. He admitted the purpose of his falsification was to conceal advance salary payments he made to himself. Local 9 is based in Tonawanda, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo. (OLMS, 8/4//06).
Ohio President, Vice President Get Probation for Embezzlement
On July 17 and July 20, Jean Paul Grennay and James Bates, respectively, the former president and vice president of Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers Local 5-712, were sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, to two years probation for theft of union funds. The two each had pleaded guilty this past spring to embezzling $4,412. The local is based in Hicksville, Ohio, in the northwest part of the state. (OLMS, 8/4/06).
Texas Secretary-Treasurer Pleads Guilty to False Record Entries
On July 19, Janice McKamey, former secretary-treasurer of Local 88N of the Graphic Communications International Union (GCIU), pled guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas to one count of making false entries in union records. The GCIU since the start of 2005 has been affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. (OLMS, 8/4/06).
St. Louis President, Secretary Indicted for Theft, False Entries
On July 27, Mary Love and Danna France, respectively, former president and financial secretary of Local 96 of the American Federation of Government Employees, each were indicted in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri on three counts of theft, one count of making a false report, and one count of creating false records. Local 96 represents employees at the VA Medical Center in St. Louis. (OLMS, 8/4/06).
